We are continuously recruiting highly motivated trainees at all levels—including undergraduate students, master's students, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and research interns—to join our research program in artificial intelligence, computational pathology, digital pathology, medical imaging, and precision medicine.
We are particularly interested in outstanding PhD applicants with strong backgrounds in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, biomedical engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related disciplines. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge AI methods, collaborate with clinicians and biomedical scientists, publish in leading journals and conferences, and contribute to translational research with real-world clinical impact.

Empire AI Postdoctoral Fellowship: Multimodal Digital Pathology and AI for Precision Oncology

SUNY Upstate Medical University, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Empire Postdoctoral Fellows Program. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of AI-driven healthcare innovation while leveraging the advanced Empire AI high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. The fellow will have access to the outstanding research environments and resources of both institutions, mainly SUNY Upstate Pathology, and will contribute to pioneering research in computational pathology and precision medicine with the opportunity to help shape the future of AI-enabled healthcare.

Research Objectives

The fellow will lead research on the project "Multimodal Digital Pathology and AI for Spatially Informed Precision Oncology". The primary focus is developing Advanced machine learning models to analyze gigapixel whole-slide images (WSIs). Key research areas include:

  • Integrating deep neural networks to capture complex tumor microenvironment (TME) architecture.

  • Developing modeling frameworks for large-scale, weakly labeled, and heterogeneous datasets across institutions.

  • Implementing cross-modal integration of pathology images with molecular and clinical data.

  • Utilizing Empire AI’s distributed GPU training and large-memory nodes to transition research prototypes into clinically deployable systems.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Biomedical Informatics, or a closely related field.

  • Strong technical background in machine/deep learning, AI in precision medicine, or computational healthcare.

  • Proven research excellence, evidenced by publications in top-tier venues such as MICCAI, CVPR, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, or high-impact bioinformatics journals.

  • Strong programming skills and experience with machine learning frameworks applied to biology and medicine.

  • Preferred expertise in biomarker research in translational/clinical oncology and computational oncology.

Position Details & Benefits

  • Duration: The position is funded for two (2) years.

  • Primary location: SUNY Upstate Medical University, Intelligent Health Computing (IHC) Core (https://ihcx.org/), with collaboration with Stony Brook University.

  • Access: The fellow will have guaranteed and prioritized access to Empire AI compute resources, including dedicated GPU quotas.

  • Environment: The role provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment with joint mentorship from Dr. Bardia Rodd (SUNY Upstate) and Dr. Dimitris Samaras (Stony Brook University).
